Due to holiday and vacation schedules, Donderos’ Kitchen’s first Thursday evening fixed-price tapas night will not be held in January.
But the event will be back in full force on February 5th, the first Thursday of that month. In response to suggestions of some of our regular diners, we will be doing an Afghan dinner.
Tim and family actually spent a week on vacation in Afghanistan, if you can believe it! (That was in 1977, before the Soviet invasion and the succeeding decades of turmoil there.) He goes to Afghan restaurants in the U.S. whenever he travels to a city that has one.
The fixed menu for the evening includes:
Selection of dried and fresh fruits and nuts;
Grilled eggplant appetizer with thick yogurt;
Spiced pumpkin “Borani” (curry-like) with naan bread;
Lamb meatball “Kofta Qorma” (curry-like);
Spinach and carrot “Pulao” rice;
“Shir Berenj” (rice pudding scented with rose water).
Tim will discuss the dishes and the tradition behind them as they are presented for your dining pleasure.
Bring the wine of your choice. The curry-like dishes are not highly spicy, so medium-bodied non-oaked red wines will go with this menu, as will chilled whites like Albariño, Viognier, Chenin Blanc, and Chardonnay.
Or -- for a great wine pairing at a modest price, see Dave Wells at the Healthy Gourmet (1087 Baxter St, telephone 706 353-3107). Dave and Tim frequently teach cooking and wine classes at the Healthy Gourmet, and Dave selects wines to go with Tim’s style of cooking.
