Eastern European
For Donderos’ prix-fixe tapas night on the first Thursday of December, the dishes will be from Russia, Poland and Finland: hearty food for the colder weather.
Join us for an assortment of delightful small international treats prepared for you by Tim and friends. You bring your wine, or beer, of choice.
Tim will introduce and discuss the dishes as they are served.
The specialties this evening will include: Gefilte Fish (Eastern European Jewish fish “meatball”) with beet-horseradish sauce; Baked mushroom-potato Pirozhki (Russian stuffed pastries); “Tefteli” (Russian beef and rice meatballs); Mini-platter with smoked salmon and dill, house-spiced “pot” cheese, and Finnish Lappi cheese; Kielbasa sausage with braised cabbage and sauerkraut (Polish); Potato salad with beets and pickled gherkins (Russian).
A wide variety of wines, fairly dry ones, will go with most of the dishes. A Grüner Veltliner or Sauvignon Blanc (chilled), or a Pinot Noir would be good. In addition, beer would be traditional in both Russia and Poland. Lager or Pilsner types with mild hops would be Tim’s choice, particularly the Czech beer Pilsner Urquell.
Or -- for a great wine pairing at a modest price, see Dave Wells at the Healthy Gourmet (1087 Baxter St, telephone 706 353-3107). Dave and Tim frequently teach cooking and wine classes at the Healthy Gourmet, and Dave selects wines to go with Tim’s style of cooking.
