Tapas with Tim

Tapas with Tim: British and Irish Small Dishes -- Thursday May 7th

Donderos’ prix-fixe tapas night on the first Thursday of May will feature specialties from England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland.

Though not typically considered the answer to a gourmet’s prayer, food from the British Isles is typically of good quality, and comforting.

Join us for an assortment of delightful small treats prepared for you by Chef Tim and friends. You bring your wine, or beer, of choice.

Tim will introduce and discuss the dishes as they are served.

The specialties this evening include: Welsh Rabbit (aka Rarebit) – savory melted cheese sauce over toast points; Irish Colcannon – buttery mashed potatoes blended with sautéed kale; Anglo-Indian Turkey Rissoles – chopped meat cake with apple curry sauce; English and Irish cheeses accompanied by Major Grey’s Chutney; Irish Shepherd’s Pie – lamb and beef pie with cheese-enriched potato topping; Scottish Cranachan – whisky-laced toasted oatmeal and whipped cream dessert with fresh raspberries.

Tim’s recommendation to accompany this selection is a Spanish wine traditionally popular in England: Rioja. But any Spanish Tempranillo, not only those produced in the Rioja region, will serve well, and Pinot Noir always seems to go with a varied menu. Alternatively, beer is the popular drink throughout all the British Isles, and goes with tonight’s dishes as well.

Or -- for a great wine pairing at a modest price, see Dave Wells at the Healthy Gourmet (1087 Baxter St, telephone 706 353-3107). Dave and Tim frequently teach cooking and wine classes at the Healthy Gourmet, and Dave selects wines to go with Tim’s style of cooking.
